“The painter of Mallorca”
Daniel Codorniu (Palma de Mallorca, 1943 – 2023) is one of the great names of 20th-century Mallorcan landscape painting. Trained at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he later taught, he returned to the island to devote himself entirely to painting it.
Heir to the post-impressionism of the Catalan masters, his work captures the Mediterranean light in seascapes, coves and corners of the Serra de Tramuntana. Cala Figuera de Santanyí — where he painted until the end of his life —, Deià, Cala Pi and the bay of Palma are constant settings in his painting.
Known as “the painter of Mallorca”, Codorniu exhibited continuously in the island's leading galleries and his work is found in numerous private collections in Spain and abroad. He worked mainly in oil on canvas, with a vibrant brushstroke and a palette faithful to the blues and ochres of the Mallorcan coast.
