“The master who seized the light”
Guillermo Gil Pons, Guillem Gil (Establiments, Palma, 1936), is one of the landscape painters who has best painted the Serra de Tramuntana. From his first exhibition in 1965, his loose, colourful brushwork, post-impressionist at its root, earned him the nickname of “the master who seized the light”.
Sóller, Deià, Valldemossa, Sa Calobra, the Torrent de Pareis and the coves of the north coast are the settings of a body of work painted in oils, often in large format, that celebrates Mallorca's mountains and sea.
He exhibited in the key venues of Mallorcan painting in the seventies and eighties — the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Palma and the Banca March Exhibition Hall — and took his work to Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Alicante and Germany.
