Between realism and symbol
Tomàs Horrach Bibiloni (Palma, 1947 – 2012) is considered one of the most outstanding academic painters of the second half of the 20th century in Mallorca. Introduced to painting by his mother, he trained at the Escola d'Arts i Oficis in Palma and at the Escola Superior de Belles Arts in Barcelona.
After early work close to abstraction, his painting evolved towards a very personal hyperrealism, halfway between realism and symbolism. The Pla de Sant Jordi, the windmills and scenes such as his horses on the beach form part of an imagery that “created a school” on the island.
He kept close ties with the Mallorcan surrealist group La Latina, and his work remains present in the art market and in collections throughout Mallorca.
